Richard L. Weikel, the man we thought would live forever, of Woodland Heights, Ashland, passed away at the age of 86 on Sunday, December 7, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. Born October 31, 1939, in Helfenstein, Northumberland County, he was the son of Leonard “Chalky” Weikel and Betty Hummel. He spent many years working as a crane operator at Jeddo Highland Coal Company and later retired from Pagnotti Enterprises of Hazleton in 2001. He was well known for his strong work ethic and commitment to providing for his family. Richard is survived by his daughters, Gayle Weikel and Shela Howell; his grandchildren, Jack Clews, Jessie Dengler, James Dengler Jr., and Candice Bartos; and his great-grandchildren, Izabela, Mackenzie, Kaylie, Kelsie, Jase, Emma, Ares, and Asher. He is also survived by his brother, Paul Weikel, and his sisters, Mary Lou, Betty Jane, and Darlene (“Toot”). He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Betty Ann; his daughter, Mary Jane; his son, Dale; as well as his sisters and brothers. Rich can be remembered for his dedication to his bountiful gardens and hunting, as well as his giving hand. Everyone knows you’d never leave his home without food from his garden or a smile on your face from his humor. He will be greatly missed and forever in our hearts. We ask friends and family to come together to remember him at a Celebration of Life Service at 3 p.m. on Saturday, December 20, 2025, at his residence, 17 Woodland Heights, Ashland. Officiating will be Rev. Jeff Merwine, pastor of Trinity Evangelical Congregational Church, Frackville. Visit www.fritzfuneralhome.com to leave condolences. Richard W.
