Grace was born in Ashland on August 25, 1921. She was the daughter of the late Frank and Anna Maloney Young. Grace lived on Walnut Street in Ashland since 1950, where she raised her four children and lived independently until one month ago.
Grace was a lifelong member of the former Saint Joseph Roman Catholic Church, now St. Charles Borromeo Roman Catholic Church, Ashland. Active in her church, she was a charter member of the Friends of Saint Joseph, and a member of the Catholic Daughters.
During World War II, she worked at the draft board in Ashland. She later worked at the Ashland Public Library, in the office of Dr. Joseph Weber, and for the Department of Vital Records, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as registrar for Ashland and Girardville. Dr. Weber's late-night house calls and vigilant care helped her live healthfully and happily to the age of 94. She celebrated her last several birthdays by hiring a live band and inviting everyone.
Grace loved her family and friends. She was an avid traveler and spent many summer days on the beach with four generations of family members. Grace met her friends frequently at Snyder's and May's restaurants for breakfast. She was a loyal secret-keeper for her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed her independence, had a quick wit, and was as sharp as a tack up until the day she died.
Never wanting to miss out on any family fun, Grace was always the last to go to bed and the first one up in the morning. She was fortunate to reside on the Ashland parade route, and she loved having a house full of family on ABA weekend. She enjoyed treating her family to dinners, especially when there were scallops on the menu. Grace will be missed terribly, and she will live on in our stories and laughter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony J. Kelly, and a brother Charles Young, who passed away at age 5.
